My Path to Literacy

In regards to the way I perceived writing in High School, I was just like the average student: I hated it. I shared many of the problems most students had with writing: lack of ideas and organizational skills. When I was in school, I rarely wrote at all. In fact, the only paper I can recall writing was the dreaded term paper my Junior Year. I handed the paper in while not really caring what grade I would receive. I was a mediocre student and had already settled my mind that there was no way that I would ever enter college. My grades were not good enough and I did not have the money. It was just not for me. So instead, I had another more accessible future planned: I was to become a draftsman through my school’s vocational program. It was a goal that I felt was obtainable, and it came naturally to me. So when I later received my term paper back with an A, I began to wonder if I was capable of more. If I had received an A without even trying, what would I be capable of if I actually put some effort into it?
